Cognitive Psychology

Why take Cognitive Psychology?

Cognitive psychology is the study of the inner workings of the mind and encompasses topics that influence everything you do, such as attention and memory. Understanding how your mind processes information can be beneficial in everyday life including things like how you study. It will also help you understand how others process information, influencing your understanding of their behavior. Some of these things will be confirmations of things you already “know”, others will challenge you to think differently about how you encounter and interact in your world.

Class Approach

This class is online and requires students to engage with the material and each other to learn the content. Weekly reading guides help students learn the basic concepts whereas discussions allow for participation and reflection on classic cognitive psychology experiments.

Open Education Resources

In this course, students use a compilation of resources from NOBA and YouTube. In addition, students complete labs from APA's OpenPsychLab to experience classic experiments.

Project

Throughout the course, students complete a literature review paper on a topic not covered in the course. Then, at the end of the semester, that paper is turned into another format that is designed for a broader audience (e.g., brochure, newsletter).

Exams

Student demonstrate mastery of the course objectives through two exams. The exams are essay based where students are asked to apply what they have learned to different contexts or to generate examples.

No sections in the 2019-2020 academic year.
